14. a. What is bandwidth? b. Explain and give a long form of VOIP and ISP (15 Marks)
What is bandwidth?
'Bandwidth'
describes the rate at which data can be transferred to your computer from a
website or internet service within a specific time. Therefore the amount of
bandwidth you have (the bandwidth 'strength') determines the efficiency and
speed of your internet activity – that is, when you open web pages, download
files and so on.
A useful
analogy is a pipe with water running through it – the wider the pipe, the
greater the volume of water that can flow through it. The same applies to
bandwidth strength and the flow of the volume of data.
Bandwidth
is generally measured in ‘bits per second' or sometimes ‘bytes per second'.
What is VOIP?
VoIP, or Voice
over Internet Protocol, is a method for taking analog audio signals, like
the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital
data that can be transmitted over the Internet.
VoIP can
turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls.
The practical upshot of this is that by using some of the free VoIP software
that is available to make Internet phone calls, you're bypassing the phone
company (and its charges) entirely. Example - Skype
What
is ISP?
Large-scale
provider of internet connections, ISPs usually are the telephone companies who
lease bulk Internet connections to internet access providers and information
utilities, who in turn rent them to individual customers. Example; TTCL, Tigo,
Vodacom and others
(Note; Examples have
weights and will reward you some marks)
